APNM partners with diverse communities across rural New Mexico as they develop humane, long-term effective and culturally-appropriate solutions to the challenges in equine management and care. Our partnerships focus on humane, innovative, proactive practices (like supportive veterinary clinics, feed assistance, and equine contraception) rather than on divisive and often ineffective practices like roundup and removal of free-roaming horses. The wellbeing of these communities, the horses, and the lands they are on are intertwined, and all are supported through our work together.

With McCune funding, we are advancing our goals in environmental protection, economic development, and social well-being by expanding our work in the Seeding Regenerative Agriculture Project, which coordinates peer-to-peer knowledge sharing and a range of support services to help farmers and ranchers cooperatively create thriving, localized models of sustainable and regenerative food systems.
Collins Lake Ranch
Cleveland, NM
The mission of Collins Lake Ranch is to provide supported living, education and therapeutic services in a nature-based setting for our extended community family. While our original focus was only adults and children with disabilities, we discovered over time that our facilities could serve a greater population. During the COVID pandemic we used our campground facilities for students that were struggling with remote learning. This really brought to light the social and behavioral needs of the local students and we saw firsthand how much it helped to get kids outdoors. Not only did they learn academic lessons from this environment, they also improved their social well-being and developed life skills that they hadn't learned elsewhere.
The Ranch is a magical place that provides natural healing, whether it is hiking up the mountain or taking a walk around the lake. We are happy to share these resources with anyone that needs a boost in life and treats our precious land with dignity and respect.

We use the “100% Community” model developed by the Anna, Age 8 Institute to ensure that all families have access to ten vital services children need to survive and thrive: food, housing, medical/dental care, behavioral health services, transportation, parent supports, early childhood learning, community schools, youth mentoring, and job training.

Supporting individual artists means their art-based businesses are more sustainable, resulting in increased creative output in the community. By connecting artists to schools, we support academic and social/emotional growth for students while bringing the creative community directly onto campuses.
